My name is Sarah Nicholls. I am a visual artist who makes pictures with language, books with pictures, prints with type and animations with words. I build texts by moving back and forth between collecting bits of found language and editing/rewriting. I set and print my texts in metal type by hand. This is a place to write about my work in progress, and pie. Lots of pie, on a good day. I’ve been running the studio programs at The Center for Book Arts in NYC for the past eleven (yikes) years, where we promote the power of the printed word.
I am currently working on a field guide to extinct birds, which is why everything here lately is all birds, almost all the time.

I’m a fan! Would love to see your process.
Thank you!
My process might not be that interesting to watch. There’s a lot of procrastination involved. And internet-time-wasting/ “writing”. Then yelling at the cats. Some whittling. And then I organize some letters.
Sarah, I too have a much cherished copy of William and the Dragon from when I was a kid. I now read it to my children…
That sweater! I agree…
Love this little book so much.
